Memories

Dear Grandma,

My earliest memories include you, your house and your yard at 143 Hampton Avenue. You provided me with a sense of security and love my whole life. I know that Heavenly Father has preserved you (You are very well preserved!) to care for me and now for two more generations of grandchildren. You are the glue that has held our family together for four generations. I am honored to be your Granddaughter!

Love,

Sue (formally little Susie)

This is my list of memories, in no particular order:

1. Singing, “How Much is That Doggie in the Window” with your little record player.

2. Magic and card tricks, jokes and puzzles.

3. A baby doll made out of your handkerchief while we sat in church.

4. Smiling and walking while you took movies of us.

5. Cold meatloaf sandwiches after the parade on the 4th of July.

6. Home grown tomatoes from Grandpa’s garden.

7. Puffed rice balls at Christmas.

8. Your toy box in the bedroom closet.

9. Dozens of home sewn outfits.

10. Carmel Crispies in the mail.

11. Quilts stitched with love.

12. Ice cream with sprinkles.

13. Solitaire

14. Pecan Brittle in the mail.

15. Calling me “your little Susie”.

16. Soft boiled eggs in egg cups and bread cut into long strips.

17. Potica bread at Christmas.

18. Eating on TV trays and drinking milk out of shot glasses.

19. BYU Devotionals on TV.

20. Always finding cookies in the cookie jar.

21. Playing quiet when Grandpa was sleeping.

22. The lace curtains in your living room.

23. Sitting on your porch swing on summer evenings.

24. Watching fireworks from your front porch.

25. Watching you show my children the same tricks and puzzles you showed me when I was little.

26. Watching my children play with toys from the same toy box, from the same closet that I played with.

27. Still going to your house after the July 4th Parade.

28. Sitting with my children on your porch swing.

29. Even as an adult I loved to sleep over at your house and have you fix me breakfast on a TV tray.

30. Favorite Grandma Quote: It’s kind of funny that you can’t tickle yourself and get a kick out of it!

Sweet memories Sue! My children missed out on all those memories by growing up in California. Mom visited only when a new baby was expected with the exception of one or two short visits when mom and dad both came. When we came to Salt Lake to visit, we spent lots of time at the Winegar's. Wish I could have do overs. Thanks for sharing those sweet memories.
